The Dark Knight Rises may not have quite reached the quality highs of its predecessor, The Dark Knight, but it is the most financially successful entry into Christopher Nolan's highly acclaimed Batman trilogy.
It's an especially impressive figure considering the darker, grittier tone of these movies, which typically aren't conducive to billion-dollar success - just look at the DC Extended Universe. Most of the movies that crack the billion-dollar mark are fairly safe blockbuster films with plenty of comic relief and a light, inoffensive tone.
Given that The Dark Knight Rises centred on a superhero who doesn't want to be a superhero anymore, drumming up such business is extremely impressive.
