The third Transformers movie is the perfect testament to just how much audiences - primarily teenagers, it seems - love Michael Bay's excessive explosion of state-of-the-art visual effects, insane action, dumb humour and eye candy female characters.
Even with the series' latest entry, The Last Knight, grossing a disappointing $605.4 million worldwide, it still would've been a solid win for Marvel if Black Panther grossed anywhere close to that figure.
That Black Panther more-than-doubled The Last Knight's take and inconceivably toppled Dark of the Moon is a move so unexpected it almost restores faith in casual moviegoing audiences entirely. Almost.
Considering how cynically the Transformers movies are put together, and how blatantly they pander to undemanding audiences, for an intelligent, thoughtful and well-made movie like Black Panther to destroy it is a mighty satisfying sight.
