13 Most Disappointing Movie Threequels
1. The Godfather Part III
The Originals: Francis Ford Coppola did the unthinkable, by releasing not only a 1972 adaptation of Mario Puzo's crime novel that's popularly deemed the greatest film ever made, but also following it up just two years later with a sequel considered to be as-good if not better than the original.
In a hugely improbable feat, both films even ended up winning Best Picture Oscars and have been enormously influential pop-culture mainstays ever since.
The Threequel: Some sixteen years after the last movie, The Godfather Part III finally arrived, and though by any typical metric it's a solid crime drama, coming after two of the most acclaimed movies of all time, that just wasn't good enough.
Though it was still nominated for seven Oscars, including Best Picture, the plot was decidedly more cartoonish than its predecessors, the stakes didn't feel high enough, and Sofia Coppola's atrocious performance damn near sinks the emotional core.
At least Pacino was still legitimately great in it, but given the near-perfection of its predecessors, this was a huge comedown overall.
