On the back of Drive, Nicolas Winding Refn was a white-hot property in Hollywood. He'd made one of the coolest films of the decade, which played cheekily with genre expectations and featured a star-confirming performance by Ryan Gosling. So of course we'd all practically leap into the cinema for the director's follow-up, which teamed the pair up again and seemed to be marketed as a similar vehicle of cool.

You don't pass up the opportunity to enjoy something as good as Drive twice, after all.

The issue here, of course, is that Only God Forgives is nothing like Drive. It has Ryan Gosling in it, but it might as well be an exercise in directorial masturbation while the camera voyeuristically laps up Gosling. It's a provocative film, not only in its imagery but also in its agenda to f*ck with every "mainstream" film fan who loved Drive, and it's hard not to feel like Refn was aiming to make people leave in disgust or boredom.

If that was his sole aim, he did well.
