10. The Golden Compass
In some alternate universe, there is a His Dark Materials movie franchise that rivals the Harry Potter movie series not only in quality but in appreciation. So beloved was the source material by Philip Pullman that it has to be the case, because there were at least three great movies in there.
Unfortunately, in this universe, we got the version made by Chris Weitz, who was some distance away from the writer partly responsible for Rogue One. The problem, of course, was that the film was as exciting for fans of the books as the first Harry Potter movie was to fans. So we were all duped into expecting something brilliant - perhaps even something LIKE Harry Potter.
The reality was so disappointing and flatly boring that it was a challenge to stay in the cinema and even harder to stay awake if you actually committed to the full run-time. What should have been joyous was an absolute ordeal.
