5. Captain America: The Winter Soldier Is A Post-Snowden Superhero Film
The Movie: Captain America's second movie revolves largely around S.H.I.E.L.D.'s new program codenamed Project Insight, a trio of Helicarriers linked to spy satellites in order to take out threats before they commit atrocities based on intelligence gathered. S.H.I.E.L.D. has itself been infiltrated by Hydra, operating under the belief that humanity would prefer safety and security at the expense of freedoms and privacy. The Release: The Winter Soldier was released just 9 months after Edward Snowden famously leaked documents detailing the extent of the NSA's surveillance systems, and though pure coincidence, it made TWS the most timely and politically astute Marvel movie ever. With its depiction of leaking classified information the public should be aware of and noting how dangerous a lack of accountability and oversight can be in government institutions, you'd need to be blind not to see the easy comparisons.
