It's not at all surprising that Logan was a strong box office success last year, though it certainly performed above expectations by easily quadrupling its $127 million budget.

The major handicap Logan had here was that pesky R-rating, which while placing an undeniable ceiling on its box office potential, also lured in audiences who were perhaps deterred by the neutered nature of the mainline X-Men series.

There's no way anybody would've guessed 18 months ago that an R-rated Wolverine movie would ever out-gross a Han Solo prequel, but thanks to over-the-odds interest in the former (partly thanks to effusive reviews) and less-than-expected in the latter, Logan absolutely smoked Han.
