It would be extremely naive to underestimate the viability of middle-aged women at the box office - a demographic that's incredibly under-represented in Hollywood - though the fact that 2008's Sex and the City spin-off movie trounced Solo is still pretty damn embarrassing.

Given that Sex and the City appeals aggressively to women, while Star Wars has a broader appeal across gender lines, it's an incredibly surprising result. Clearly women seeing the movie in parties and dragging their boyfriends to the cinema gave it a huge box office boost.

The 2010 sequel, however, took just $294.6 million worldwide, giving Solo a safe edge over it (albeit one hardly worth celebrating).
