There was a time when some overzealous analysts honestly felt that Mary Poppins Returns had the broad appeal necessary to score $1 billion worldwide, if not dangerously close to it.

Oh, how naive.

Still, it was reasonable to expect the belated sequel to the hit 1964 musical to multiply its $130 million budget many times over, scoring at least $500 million and becoming one of holiday 2018's biggest success stories.

Instead, Mary Poppins Returns performed not-awfully at the box office, though you'd be hard-pressed to call it good compared to the return Disney was clearly expecting.

What's to blame? Aquaman gobbling up everyone's box office bucks, a lack of nostalgia for the film outside of a few select markets (meaning it didn't even get a Chinese release) and merely decent reviews hardly suggesting it was a must-see event movie.

Even so, a third film is reportedly in development with Emily Blunt set to reprise the title role.
