Another movie that summarily trounced Solo against tremendous odds is The Meg, a glorified SyFy movie with an absurd $130 million budget that had bomb written all over it.

However, an extremely canny marketing campaign - which leaned enthusiastically into the film's corniness - and a sensible mid-August release date where it had little serious competition compelled audiences to see it in droves.

Shark movies are another film genre - alongside horror - that's basically critic-proof, and despite wildly mixed reviews, The Meg quadrupled its budget worldwide, aided by a $153 million assist from China (comprising 28.9% of its final take).

It also marked the highest-grossing starring role for Jason Statham outside of the Fast and the Furious franchise, proving he's still got firm audience appeal after all these years.
