However, the summer's not over yet, and beyond that, with more comic book movies being trotted out than ever, there's a high number of upcoming superhero flicks that could end up stealing the thunder away from Civil War.

Yes, these 13 movies are likely to vary wildly in quality and we're certainly more excited for some than others, but each has the potential to avoid Civil War's few pitfalls and serve up the absolute best comic book film of the last few years. It may not seem likely in some cases, but it's sure not impossible.

Here are 13 upcoming superhero movies that could beat Captain America: Civil War...

13. Suicide Squad

Why It Could Beat Civil War: Tone is a potentially major secret weapon Suicide Squad has going for it: if it can combine the grit and superb visuals of Zack Snyder's two DCEU movies with some wit and dark humour, this could end up basically being an edgier version of Guardians of the Galaxy.

Harley Quinn and The Joker are sure to be the movie's aces, and the appearance of Batman in a supporting role surely won't hurt. This could be a mold-breaking superhero flick that helps redefine the genre's possibilities.

Why It Might Not: Civil War had the advantage of largely dealing with known characters that audiences were familiar with, and its more fantastical tone allowed something as cheerfully bonkers at Giant Man's brief appearance to effortlessly slot alongside the grounded musings on superhero accountability.

Also, Suicide Squad will probably struggle to muster up the stakes and quality of character drama that Iron Man and Cap's opposition mustered, the latter being the culmination of more than a dozen movies to date.
