An adaptation of Neil Gaiman's beloved comic book series has been in the works for about two decades, though only in recent years has it gained much serious traction.

Though both original producer-and-star Joseph Gordon-Levitt and screenwriter Eric Heisserer have bailed from the project, if the production takes its time to regroup and truly capture the beguiling tone of the source material before moving ahead, this could be a real game-changer for the comic book genre.

Much like Logan, The Sandman is focused less on conventional superhero shenanigans, and with its abundance of surreal, dreamlike imagery and epic, larger-than-life characters, could bring a rare, true artistry to the comic book genre.
