12. $250 Make-Up Wins An Oscar

Proof that you don't need tens of millions of dollars to win an Oscar, the modestly-budgeted Dallas Buyers Club had to cut corners where it could, and though it's difficult to believe in looking at the final product, the make-up work by Adruitha Lee and Robin Mathews reportedly only cost $250. Looking at Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto's deeply ill, disheveled faces in the movie, it's clearly a staggering achievement well worthy of the Oscar itself, and making this fact clear a few weeks before Oscar voting began was no doubt a smart move by the movie's PR team. This win in particular should be of sure inspiration to other filmmakers: though a big budget can help you secure stars and so on, not everything needs to cost an arm and a leg, and if you're got a great enough script, people will make do with what they can to make sure it gets made.
