The Rule

"Don't cross the streams...It would be bad...Try to imagine all life as you know it stopping instantaneously and every molecule in your body exploding at the speed of light."

So, that's bad then.

But wait...

Except, that doesn't happen. When it suits the characters, Egon decides there's a very slim chance that his scientific theory about the results of crossing the stream could be completely wrong. No science, no justification, just "suck it and see."

The result, the streams turn into one mega-stream, which causes an explosion that apparently only affects Gozer and the Stay Puft Marshmallow man, because science checked out a long time ago.
