Creativity isn't (quite) dead.
With multiplexes annually jammed full of sequels, remakes, reboots, re-imaginings and adaptations of existing material, it can feel like a daunting task seeking out truly original movies.
Thankfully, digging a little deeper below the top-shelf studio slate will reveal more enticing, wholly unique projects, largely dreamt up by auteur filmmakers who have earned the right to make whatever they want.
To make things a little more fun, this list also excludes biographical films or anything with a clear historical rooting, so sadly, Paul Thomas Anderson's upcoming fashion drama didn't make the cut, considering the highly plausible murmurs that it's actually a stealth biopic of 1950s fashion maestro Charles James.
Rather, these unambiguously original upcoming projects, ranging from action flicks to psycho-thrillers, film noirs, animated films and screwball comedies, should prove that, beyond the relentlessness of the Hollywood blockbuster juggernaut, there are filmmakers looking to show audiences something they've never seen before.
