14 Simple Fixes That Could Have Made Suicide Squad Awesome
3. Have Rick Flag Sacrifice Himself
The Problem
Well, aside from not liking Rick Flag personally, he had absolutely no progression to his narrative arc. He was just a grump who picked fights with Deadshot and then stood around in the third act calling plays and talking like he was reading out stage directions.
The Solution
The guy needed to die. Even for the romantic angle that should have been removed, the correct end was to have him sacrifice himself to save his lover.
But with that unnecessary relationship gone, Flag's dynamic and leadership friction with Deadshot should have been played up more. They should have gone through stages, with Flag hating him for what he represents, then learning his backstory and learning to respect him for his actions in battle. Okay, so I'm basically borrowing the plot of Fast & Furious there, but who cares?
Then Flag should have ultimately sacrificed himself to let Deadshot take over as the real leader, laying down his life so that Deadshot could live to see his daughter. I would even have allowed some horribly cheesy dialogue about brotherhood and about morality not being black and white.
