Why It Looks Terrible: The directorial debut of writer-producer Dean Devlin (Stargate, Independence Day) has endured a thoroughly troubled production, with shooting beginning exactly three years before that October 20th release date. To add to the turmoil, reshoots took place late last year with a new director.

The trailer released to date looks outrageously cheesy, and the plot, which has Gerard Butler attempting to stop a series of climate-controlling satellites from ending all life on Earth, just might veer on the wrong side of ridiculous for most. The worst thing you can say about Geostorm is that it looks painfully generic.

Why It'll Still Make A Profit: The marketing is clearly taking aim at the Roland Emmerich demographic here, and to that end it'll probably end up being moderately successful, especially internationally, where disaster movies are feverishly devoured.

As awards season kicks off, Geostorm could very well bring the braindead thrills audiences are craving, regardless of its actual quality.
