It's pretty unsurprising that a restrained supporting performance like this has been lost in the shuffle when David Fincher's drama is largely driven by Rosamund Pike's demented, sure-to-be-nominated lead performance, and the indomitable star power of co-lead Ben Affleck. Nevertheless, Carrie Coon is excellent in Gone Girl as Nick Dunne's (Affleck) twin sister Margo, who proves to be one of the few voices of reason throughout the film, maintaining her logical approach all the way to the devastating finale. She's in many ways a prototypical David Fincher female: quick-witted, cynical, and hilarious, and whether she's making grim jokes about the situation or assessing the danger of her brother's predicament, Coon is splendidly understated throughout. Her would-be Oscar scene is no doubt her breakdown near the end of the movie, though sadly her performance has simply flown too low to get the attention and plaudits it sorely deserves.
