It's not exactly saying much to declare the first Resident Evil movie "the best one", because it still didn't give a damn about honouring the source material and was unrepentant trash through and through.

However, there's one undeniably brilliant sequence when Alice (Milla Jovovich), her fellow captors and special operatives are attempting to reach the Red Queen AI in order to turn off the Hive's defenses.

The operatives find themselves trapped inside a narrow hallway that fires white-hot lasers at them in a series of waves, as if to prolong the torture for maximum anxiety.

In the first wave, a woman's head is sliced clean off and a poor sap loses his fingers, while in the second another soldier attempts to out-smart the laser by jumping over it, only for it to follow his dive and slice him in half anyway.

Finally, it comes down to squad leader One (Colin Salmon), who manages to evade one wave, but is unable to escape the final one, a box-grid of lasers that is deactivated about a second after it dices One into meaty chunks. If only he stepped back a few extra feet.

Cue a wonderfully gnarly final image of One as his body falls apart, and say what you will about Paul W.S. Anderson, but he directed the hell out of this scene. The awesome Marilyn Manson score probably didn't hurt either.
