7. The Beguiled

The Plot: Adapted from Thomas P. Cullinan's novel, a gravely wounded Union soldier (Colin Farrell) arrives at a girls-only school in Virginia, and as he convalesces there, he stirs up the repressed sexual yearnings of the young women residing within.

Why It's Awesome: Sofia Coppola makes the most of Cullinan's source material in this ominous slow-burn, driven by a fantastic ensemble cast also including Nicole Kidman, Kirsten Dunst and Elle Fanning.

As a slyly creepy look at gender relations with some unexpected dark humour thrown in for good measure, this is another winner for the divisive director, even if it's not quite the awards player many initially expected it might be.
