RottenTomatoes Score: 0% The Plot: Basil (Jared Leto) is a young English aristocrat who falls in love with a lower-class woman, Julia Sherwin (Claire Forlani), though must keep this secret from his father Frederick (Derek Jacobi), who threatens to disinherit him should he not find a "suitable" mate. Why It Sucks: Yes, Leto's Joker is in no way a member of the Justice League, but he's almost certain to appear in one of the two planned Justice League movies, so he makes the cut here. Anyway, this film is just absurd from start to finish: it wants to be a prestigious period film but also wants the trashy allure of a bodice-ripping novel, and ultimately succeeds as neither. There's some really weird casting here: Leto isn't an obvious choice but he does about as well as to be expected with the material, while Christian Slater, whose accent fluctuates throughout, is just laughable. In addition, it deviates significantly from Wilkie Collins' source material, and with its avalanche of cliches, wastes a ton of good actors.
