7. The Greasy Strangler – Eye-Popping Murder

About as black a comedy as black comedy gets, British director Jim Hosking’s feature debut The Greasy Strangler tells the weird, crass and often off-putting tale of a serial killer who slathers his naked body in lard before going out on the streets to kill people via – you guessed it – strangulation. Despite that grossly surreal premise alongside a barrage of puerile fart jokes, critics managed to find worth in its camp bad taste awarding it a very respectable (considering its content) 64% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Part of the film’s odd appeal is its disgusting but strangely watchable death scenes. The eponymous serial killer doesn’t merely dispatch his victims with run-of-the-mill asphyxiation, no no, he strangles them until their eyes literally pop out of their heads. Similar in gross-out humour to Peter Jackson’s Braindead, it’s death scenes alone could too see it join the ranks of cult comedy horror classics.
