1. Dunkirk

Terrific though all of these trailers were, not one could quite match the visceral, gut-wrenching anxiety of the main trailer for Christopher Nolan's war epic Dunkirk.

Over two-and-a-half minutes, this trailer makes expert use of a ticking clock, which underpins the entirety of Hans Zimmer's score in the final movie, to induce a constant state of tension in the viewer, accompanied by the slow-building intensity of the central wartime scenario.

Much like the final film itself, it doesn't put too much of an emphasis on characterisation, but rather the spectacle and the use of practical elements over digital carnage. The ticking clock continually speeds up as the action becomes more frantic, leading to one final dogfight tease in a trailer that, in of itself, is nothing short of a masterpiece.

And the movie's pretty damn great, too.
