The Plot: A new-to-the-job carer, Ben (Paul Rudd), starts caring for irascible 18-year-old muscular dystrophy sufferer Trevor (Craig Roberts), and together the two venture off on a road trip where they learn how to deal with life's anguish.
While this material could certainly be unbearably sappy in the wrong hands, thankfully it lands on the right side of poignant thanks to strong, empathetic central performances from Rudd and Roberts.
Hell, this is a movie good enough that even Selena Gomez, showing up as a young woman who joins their road trip, can't sink it (even if she's certainly the weakest of the trio).
As a feel-good movie that also doesn't skimp on the more unpleasant facets of its subject matter, The Fundamentals of Caring juggles its tones with admirable skill.
