10. "The Alien" - Annihilation (Ben Salisbury & Geoff Barrow)

One of the most egregiously Oscar-snubbed films of 2018 was Alex Garland's masterful sci-fi horror Annihilation.

Although every facet of its craft was first-rate, easily one of the film's most impressionable aspects was Ben Salisbury and Geoff Barrow's haunting, expectation-defying musical score.

The climactic track "The Alien" incorporates heart-rending orchestral fare with hair-raising electronica to dizzying effect, cementing the distinctly disturbing and otherworldly weirdness of Lena's (Natalie Portman) final alien encounter in the lighthouse.

This is 12 minutes of pure, masterful unease, and without it that climax just wouldn't be the same.
