6. Minding The Gap

A staggering documentary from first-time filmmaker Bing Liu, Minding the Gap sees Liu reconnecting with his skateboarding pals as they transition into aduthood and must confront issues of life, death and domestic violence (the latter being especially problematic in their hometown of Rockford, Illinois).

Minding the Gap won the U.S. Documentary Special Jury Award for Breakthrough Filmmaking, and has been praised by critics for Liu's contemplative direction and the unpredictable, achingly human tenor of the stories presented within.

It's not always fun viewing, but it's real, and serves up emotional rewards aplenty while asking concerned questions about the state of modern America.
