A smartly scripted and well-acted slow-burn sci-fi/horror where a group of scientists enter a mysterious quarantined zone known as "The Shimmer", an area where plants and animals are being biologically mutated by an unknown alien presence.

Despite being written and directed by Alex Garland (hot off the back of his debut feature Ex Machina) and featuring an excellent female cast, Annihilation flopped at the box office, presumably because there were no flying superheroes involved.

The sometimes ambiguous story and dreamlike visuals won't be for everyone but there are some genuinely horrifying and memorable moments on offer.

Annihilation deserves to be remembered as one of the best science fiction films of the past decade.
