One of the major constraints holding the Dark Knight saga back is the PG-13 rating: given the rather adult tone of the latter two films in particular, this results in a number of unsavoury, jarring edits in order to cut down on the violence. For example, when The Joker emerges from a body-bag in order to do "try-outs" for his gang, the moment in which he slashes a man's face, killing him, can't be shown, but more to the point, the edit is so awkward due to the PG-13 rating. Then, in The Dark Knight Rises, when the mercenaries are facing off against Gotham's cops, where is the blood? Why do the mercenaries not just shoot all the cops dead in like 5 seconds? Is their aim really that bad? It looks incredibly silly, and while an R-rating for these movies was never, ever going to happen, it would have allowed Nolan to push the boat out a little more in terms of adult content. Something like a Blu-ray director's cut would have been a nice compromise, perhaps.
