James Gunn knew what he was doing when he cast the charming, bada** Kurt Russell as Star-Lord's father Ego: it was to try and prevent audiences from figuring out that he was the movie's villain, which is revealed in superbly creepy fashion.

On Ego's home planet, Nebula and Gamora uncover a huge collection of skeletons, which it turns out are the corpses of his children, who he fathered with women all throughout the galaxy in his effort to find a heir who shared his Celestial power, so he could further propagate himself throughout the universe.

Ego hasn't been seeking Peter out of the sheer goodness of his heart, but he is simply his latest attempt to find an offspring who might help him continue his mission. As it turns out, Peter can help Ego, but those plans go up in smoke once Peter learns that Ego killed his mother by planting the tumour in her brain. Ouch.
