5. The Damned United - Colm Meaney (Miles O'Brien)

The Irishman started off as a part-time cast member on The Next Generation, dropping in and out as required, before he made the leap to full-time status on Deep Space Nine - a move than coincided with a Golden Globe nomination for his performance in the Roddy Doyle adaptation The Snapper.

But the actor's best film saw him turn his nous as a supporting player into a fine foil performance for Michael Sheen in Tom Hooper's The Damned United, which charts the 44-day reign of football manager Brian Clough at the helm of Leeds United.

As the embattled protagonist's predecessor - and biggest rival - Don Revie, it's a superb if small turn from Meaney, in a film that has gone somewhat underlooked in the wake of its director's bigger successes (Hooper oversaw The King's Speech next) - but it's a diamond in the rough that deserves to be revisited.
