But if anything can trump that, then it's surely his hauntingly wounded performance in a hauntingly wounded masterpiece of the superhero cinematic canon, where - after a decade-and-a-half in the role - he brought Charles Xavier to his most raw and naked.

It's a towering performance that should have cracked the awards season race, much like James Mangold's film did in the Adapted Screenplay category, but it is to the testament of the film's other two lead turns that Stewart doesn't run away with it. Instead, he's part of a sublime trinity, trying their damnedest to survive in this bloodily elegiac, melancholic western.
