The Good, The Bad and the Ugly (Ennio Morricone)

Few scores are as iconic, as instantly recognisable, and as exceptionally cool as Ennio Morricone€™s sweeping orchestral score for The Good, The Bad and the Ugly. For most people, the iconic main theme will immediately spring to mind €“ having not only become the archetypal soundtrack to the spaghetti western genre, but also a hit pop single back in the day. However, it€™s the rest of the soundtrack which continues to give the film such a grandly epic and operatic feel. Take €˜Ecstasy of Gold€™ which excitedly builds alongside Tuco€™s spirited run through the graveyard, or the breath-taking €˜Il Triello€™, which perfectly complements Sergio Leone€™s taut direction during the heart stopping final showdown. Wonderfully majestic as well as hauntingly sombre, Morricone€™s soundtrack for The Good, The Bad and The Ugly is a timeless masterpiece. Stephen Leigh
