It's rare that a foreign film manages to break out of the Best Foreign Film Oscar category, but it does happen on occasion, and one such case came today with Pawel Pawlikowski's acclaimed Polish drama Ida, which scored a second Oscar nomination for its gorgeous black-and-white cinematography. It's certainly refreshing to see the Academy thinking outside the box like this, though at the same time, it's a major shock that they overlooked far more mainstream (and arguably better) competitors like Hoyte Van Hoytema for Interstellar and Robert Elswit for Nightcrawler. Still, it'll get more eyes on the movie and give a huge boost to director of photography Ryszard Lenczweski, both of which are to be commended.
