The Oscars are supposed to be an emblem for high-quality Hollywood productions, where only the best and most acclaimed movies need apply.
Or so the Academy wants you to believe.
While the Oscars have seen the surprising likes of Norbit, Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa and Fifty Shades of Grey nominated in recent years, none of them actually managed to scoop the award outright.
These 15 films, however, did indeed win Oscars ranging from smaller crafts categories to Best Picture itself, despite the fact they've been predominantly pilloried by critics.
As shining examples of how much crafts work often goes into bad movies, and also of how critical consensus can shift significantly over the decades, these eyebrow-raising Oscar wins are proof perfect that the Academy isn't an objective barometer for quality.
At the same time, though, quality makeup, art direction, music, cinematography and so on can certainly abound in otherwise bad movies, and there's no reason they shouldn't be rewarded for that...
