6. STEM Takes Over - Upgrade
Leigh Whannell's ludicrously entertaining horror-actioner kicks into gear when Grey Trace (Logan Marshall-Green) is attacked while investigating the murder of his wife, and the STEM A.I. chip he subsequently had implanted into his spine requests permission to, well, take the wheel.
While being strangled, Grey allows STEM to take over, resulting in the A.I. immediately fighting off the attack, using Grey's body as efficiently as possible to dismantle the assailant, much to Grey's confused disgust.
The fist-pumping climax comes when STEM grabs a knife and uses it to split the goon's jaw open, killing him instantly and rendered in nauseatingly grisly detail.
As a statement of intent for STEM's ass-kicking potential, it was perhaps the year's most gloriously gory moment.
