15. Venom – Spider-Man 3

Of all the many foes and villains Spider-Man has faced in his fifty some years of existence, Venom is perhaps one of the best known. Naturally, there was a lot weighing on his first ever appearance on the big screen so imagine the disappointment when the loathsome third instalment of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy was where he turned up.

Played by Topher Grace and apparently shoehorned into the movie at the insistence of producers despite there being plenty of foes already present in the film, the villain felt rushed and came across as more of an obnoxious tw*t than anything resembling a worthy and villainous adversary of Spidey.

Given a better film and better development, Venom may have fared a lot better but in Spider-Man 3 it really was a case of too many villains spoil the broth. Though with a standalone Venom film already in the pipeline and set for release next year, there’s time yet for the villain to be done right yet. Fingers crossed.
