While the source material was very heavy in tone, a much lighter film version entitled RED premiered in 2010. In it three former CIA operatives (Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, Morgan Freeman), a former MI6 agent (Helen Mirren) and a GSA employee (Mary-Louis Parker) find themselves suddenly scrambling for survival. The reasoning for the title is changed to an acronym for 'Retired Extremely Dangerous'.
A financial and critical success, it led to a 2013 sequel, RED 2, and a television series developed by NBC.
