A movie death has the power to move you, frighten you and in a few cases, utterly disgust you.

2016 saw filmmakers make new strides in the art of onscreen death, finding new and innovative ways to make you care about compelling characters, and then coldly snuffing them out. They could be shocking for their suddenness, or the emotional impact they leave on the story.

In a few cases, it was the excessive gore that caught moviegoers off guard; hell, not even bonafide movie stars were immune to an abrupt, bloody exit....

15. Havok - X-Men: Apocalypse

Havok’s death was only the second most shocking part about his appearance in X-Men: Apocalypse. No, the most shocking thing is how he managed to look exactly the same as he did in First Class, despite a supposed twenty-year gap passing between films.

That aside it felt like he could play a mentor role to Cyclops and the new X-Men here, having been around the block a few times himself. Alas, that wasn’t to be, since he accidentally sets off an explosion in the X-Mansion, and is the only one not saved by Quicksilver.

While Havok was never a huge character in the prequel series the suddenness of his exit caught some fans off guard, but at least it gave his bro the wake-up call he needed.

Seriously, though, is it some kind of advanced anti-aging cream he’s using?
