15 Most Terrifying Horror Film Moments Of The Decade (So Far)
13. Don't Look At Her (Mama)
Mama is another one of those movies that just sort of fizzles out by the end, but it sure does have some great individual scares. For one, the design of Mama herself is terrifying. She's kind of human but with so much off about her; her movement is jerky and strange, her face is long and warped, and her long, black hair waves all over the place with a mind of its own.
A number of scenes in the film work mostly because of Mama looking and acting so strange, and this one really stands out. In the scene, the youngest daughter, Lilly, sees Mama standing at the other side of the room. As soon as Lilly turns her head, Mama darts forward with her arms outstretched and mouth wide open. It just comes out of nowhere, as up until now, it hasn't really been established that Mama can move this quickly. You'd expect her to just start slowly inching down the hallway like a zombie, but instead, she rushes ahead like a cartoon character and is right next to Lilly in a split second.
It's a jump scare, sure, but it's far more than that, playing on the creepiness of someone going from being completely stationary to heading right towards you faster than you can even react.
