15 Movies That Made 2017 The Dumbest Year Ever

5. The Mummy

Though there weren't many people jonesing for a Tom Cruise-starring reboot of The Mummy, there was most probably a way for this movie to be another entertainingly efficient, inoffensive three-star Tom Cruise blockbuster.

Instead, the new Mummy is a jaw-dropping idiotic film, with a plot that plays out like it was hastily scrawled on a dinner napkin and never given a second draft, incredulously killing one of its best cast members (Courtney B. Vance) within five minutes of him showing up, touting a horribly regressive female lead who spends most of the movie screaming for Cruise or waiting to be saved by him, and all of that desperate shilling for the Dark Universe.

The film isn't nearly goofy and silly enough to carry off how brainless it is, instead forcefeeding viewers the self-serious beginnings of a cinematic universe that, hilariously enough, is pretty much dead already.

Nothing in the actual film is dumber, though, than taking the Brendan Fraser-starring franchise and giving it to the writer of two Transformers movies, Cowboys and Aliens and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. Jesus.
