Pretty much everyone around the age of 30 has a soft spot for the first two Home Alone movies, and in fairness, the first one's actually pretty great if you can get on-board with its outlandish premise.

The cash-in sequel, though? Not so much.

It goes without saying that kids don't give a damn about creativity being dead in Hollywood or studio executives lazily recycling hit films for fast profits: they just liked watching Macaulay Culkin foiling two glorified cartoon character thieves over and over again.

But if you've bothered to revisit Home Alone 2: Lost in New York recently, it's shocking just how cynical a film it is.

Not content to just rehash the original film's core premise in a new location, some of the subplots are even identical - namely the creepy drifter who turns out to have a heart of gold - while the violence factor is upped a discomforting amount.

Oh, and it's got a Donald Trump cameo, which is probably reason enough to be disgusted by it. It's still the second-best of the five Home Alone films, but if you've seen any of the other sequels, you'll know that it's pretty much the default position.
