Release Date: March 25, 2016 (UK) / October 21, 2016 (US) What It's About: A satellite designer (Gerard Butler) is sent into space to stop a series of temperature-controlling satellites from creating a catastrophic storm which would threaten all life on Earth. A concurrent plot is also uncovered to assassinate U.S. President Palma (Andy Garcia). Why It Can Save Hollywood: Stargate and Independence Day writer Dean Devlin makes his feature directorial debut with an undeniably ambitious, presumably big-budget sci-fi which could bring the mighty, apocalyptic sci-fi genre roaring back with a vengeance. Though Devlin's scripts aren't always A-grade or even B-grade, it'll be interesting to see how he operates behind-the-camera, and with a cast also including Abbie Cornish, Jim Sturgess and Ed Harris, hopefully something special indeed has attracted them beyond a fat paycheck. Hopefully it's more visionary entertainment than disposable garbage. Time will tell.
