One of the most blatantly Oscar-baiting movies in recent years was last year's Diana, a biopic of the late Princess of Wales, starring Naomi Watts. From all outside appearances, this had the potential to be a major awards player, and even if it didn't quite measure up dramatically, it would at least be able to score a Best Actress nomination for Watts, and some other below-the-line nominations, right? Diana ended up being one of the most unexpectedly awful movies of 2013, despite as committed a performance as you'd usually expect from Watts. Skirting respectfully around the more notorious details of Diana's demise, the movie instead focuses on a soppy romance between the title character and a heart surgeon, essentially making the film feel like an adaptation of a lame romance novel with the only distinguishing factor being that it's about a famous figure. Watts ironically ended up receiving a Worst Actress Razzie nomination for the movie, which is its sole nomination in any significant awards show.
