15 Stephen King Movies: Ranked From Worst To Best

By Clare Simpson /

Stephen King has the pleasure of being the author with the most film adaptations made from his novels, novellas and short stories. He has been thrilling fans with his movie adaptations from Carrie in 1976 to a remake of Carrie in 2013 and plenty more in between those films, with more due to be made. I must stress here that the adaptations I am discussing in the article are film adaptations, not made for TV movies or mini series - there is no It, Salem's Lot or The Stand. The films in this article were shown on the big screen. In general, I would have to say that the non horror Stephen King books have fared better as film adaptations than most of the horror based adaptations. These non horror books have been given recognition by the Academy (however, it was for a horror film - Misery - that a King adaptation picked up its most significant award - Best Actress Oscar for Kathy Bates). It takes truly talented directors - Brian de Palma, Stanley Kubrick and David Cronenberg - to bring King's horror books alive in a satisfying manner. There is nearly always some adapted element from King's books that make them interesting film viewing. Even the not so hot adaptations can be entertaining as you will see below.
