15 Unexpectedly Awesome 2014 Movies Everyone Thought Would Suck

Why It Should Have Sucked: A sci-fi movie starring Ethan Hawke that played the festival circuit earlier in the year and has landed on DVD in much of Europe before getting a quiet, limited US release early next year? Wow, this movie must really suck if it's being dumped so aggressively, right? Why It Was Awesome: Pretty much destined to become a cult classic, the latest effort from the Spierig Brothers (Daybreakers, which also starred Hawke) is an ambitious, distinctly weird time travel flick that defies almost every expectation audiences have of the genre. Focusing more on the bizarre story of Sarah Snook's character (and the less revealed, the better), it might not fit the bill for audiences expecting tons of action, but if you're prepared to put your thinking cap on, this is the film for you. Snook gives a magnificent performance, while Hawke is his usual, reliably great self, and though the end is slightly too predictable, on the whole this is a fascinatingly bonkers, mind-bending interpretation of the mechanics of time travel.
