15 Upcoming Horror Films You Should Be Excited About

15. Final Girl (August 14)

Horror movies have treated women poorly for a long time now, but that's been turning around in recent years with female characters that kick a lot of ass and aren't merely victims. That was the case with Erin in You're Next, Lola in The Loved Ones, and Final Girl looks like it will fit nicely in that category. 

In Final Girl, a group of teenage boys take girls into the woods to hunt, but they end up with more than they bargained for when they pick the highly trained Veronica (Abigail Breslin). Based on the trailer, the movie seems like it's going to take the formula of having a female victim beaten down for an hour and a half and flip that on its head, turning her into the one doing the beating.

That premise could be pretty fun, and Abigail Breslin has been killing it with horror roles lately. She also recently appeared in Maggie with Arnold Schwarzenegger, and in 2013 she was an excellent lead in the underrated ghost film Haunter. Though possibly leaning more into action/thriller than horror, Final Girl definitely appears to be utilizing horror tropes, and it has potential to be a great time.
