A $100 million adaptation of a relatively niche fantasy novel directed by a first-time filmmaker and lacking any A-list leads? Good luck with that.
Even with Peter Jackson producing, this one's a colossal gamble that's releasing in-between an animated Spider-Man movie, Aquaman, Bumblebee and Mary Poppins Returns. Plus, with the Fantastic Beasts sequel releasing a month earlier, that should give audiences their fantasy fill for a while.
There's little chance for Mortal Engines to compete with so many better-established properties, so unless it moves into early January, it's done before it even hits cinemas, which is sad.
