Why It's Doomed: Though the project has scored the major coup of securing Tom Hardy to play Eddie Brock aka Venom, it's just hard to be enthusiastic about a film that's been rushed into production in order to capitalise on the recent success of Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Still, this is merely an "adjunct" to the MCU Spider-Man and won't have any direct interaction with it. The inconsistent Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, Gangster Squad) directs, while the trio of screenwriters are collectively responsible for Kangaroo Jack, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, The Dark Tower and Fifty Shades of Grey. Ouch.
It's just hard to trust Sony Pictures with a property this close to fans' hearts, and though Hardy's performance will probably be at least decent, the script and direction are major red flags right now.
