There's probably no plot element in the film more contrived than how quickly Rey learns to use the Force. She initially has no idea that the Force is calling out to her, then she very suddenly manages to use mind control to Jedi mind trick a stormtrooper in hilarious fashion, and after that it's not long before she can hold her own against Kylo Ren in the climactic lightsaber fight. It felt like the film was in such a rush to power through her arc without earning it by taking the easy way out. As such it wasn't very convincing or satisfying, even if you accept that Rey's combat skill can be explained by her adept use of a staff weapon earlier in the movie. Even so, it doesn't feel anywhere near as potent as Luke's Jedi journey from the original movies.
