The Role: Disgraced journalist Eddie Brock, who eventually bonds with the alien symbiote in order to become the grotesque supervillain Venom.

Why It's Unexpected: Tom Hardy is one of the hottest actors working today, but the idea of him getting anywhere near Sony's planned Marvel Universe is difficult to reconcile, simply because it seems like such a gamble at this stage, especially with hit-and-miss director Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, Gangster Squad) at the helm.

Will It Work?: Hardy's acting chops are totally beyond doubt and he's reportedly a huge fan of the character, so there's a damn good reason fans are insanely excited for this.
